Walmart employee putting groceries in car trunk

With the birth of my second daughter last fall, I became a working parent of two kids under two. So I was more than open to suggestions about how to save time, money and hassle.

Thats when a savvy mom friend told me about Walmart pickup and delivery. Its the best! she said. Seriously, youll never go back to shopping in-store again.

I was already hitting up my local Walmart Supercenter about once a week. But I always shied away from pickup because A) I figured Id have to pay extra and B) I worried my order wouldnt be right.

It turned out my reservations were wrong. To my great surprise and delight, Walmart curbside pickup is free. (And unlimited delivery through Walmart+ costs only $98 a year.) Thats a big advantage over some stores that apply a surcharge for every single item or charge a fee for pickup.

Walmart employee inspecting banana

I also learned I didnt need to worry about missing items and bruised produce. According to my account, Ive placed 45 pickup orders since September 2020. Guess how many had major issues? That would be a big, fat zero.

Im now a total convert to Walmart pickup and delivery. And Im loving it even more now that its summer and things are gradually returning to normal. My family and I are stepping out and going to the zoo, the pool, the park and the beach after being housebound for so long.

What I dont love is the very long list of items we need for these outings. Parents, you know what Im talking about: diapers, wipes, sunscreen, hats, swimsuits, hand sanitizer, toys, bug spray, sunglasses, snacks, sippy cups, a change of clothes in case an accident happens. Im sure Im forgetting something here!

Thats where Walmart pickup is my saving grace. I can literally buy any of the above at Walmart and its so easy to do.

Walmart mobile device

As I notice Im running low on items, I simply add them to my list in the Walmart app. Sometimes my list has everything from tomatoes to baby food to a power cord on it. Thats because Walmarts got everything your family needs under one very large roof.

When Im happy with my list and meet the $35 minimum order requirement, I schedule my pickup time. But before I do, the app serves up a list of items I normally buy and asks if I want to add them to the order. This feature is absolutely genius because mom brain is for real, yall.

From there, I simply drive to the pickup area at the allotted time, pop my trunk and wait as the friendly associate fills my trunk with the goods.

I love being able to schedule a pickup around my schedule. It doesnt matter if its after a morning visit to the zoo or after an evening baseball gameits so easy to fit grocery shopping into these busy summer months.

Ive done Walmart pickup dozens of times and it still feels a little magical. It really is amazing how much timeand moneyIm saving.

We all know Walmart has great prices. Ive maximized those savings even more by switching to Walmart brands like Equate, Great Value and Parents Choice baby products. (The diapers are fantastic!)

This summer, skip the store and try out Walmart pickup and delivery. Youll save so much time (and hard-earned dollars). And thatll free you up to do the most important thing: have fun in the sun with the ones you love.

Grab this Thanksgiving shopping list and head to Costco!

Whether you host a small dinner or prep a sprawling spread of classic Thanksgiving recipes to feed a crowd, the savings are generous at your neighborhood Costco. In fact, starting mid-November, the aisles will be a cornucopia of seasonal buys.

From the turkey and table decor to nutmeg and whipped cream, Costco makes home cooks everywhere thankful for one-stop shopping.

These Costco shopping tips will save you tons of money.

Your Thanksgiving Shopping List for Costco

Decor

Dress up your dining room with a bouquet or two of fresh flowers from Costco’s floral department. At $9.99 for a mixed seasonal bouquet, including long-lasting flowers like alstroemeria and carnations, you can add a beautiful element to your holiday spread.

Pick up small candle holders filled with tea lights also create a warm ambiance without obstructing anyone’s view (or access to food). If you have the space to add some height, Costco’s five-piece LED pillar candles are an affordable, elegant option.

Get inspired by these gorgeous Thanksgiving decor ideas.

Appetizers

Costco has a whole host of ready-to-eat snacks and hors d’oeuvres. Here are my top picks:

  • Soups: Harry’s Creamy Tomato Basilboxed and ready for warming in your slow cooker or Kirkland Organic Chicken Stock to get you a jump start on these broth soup recipes.
  • Cold apps: Gourmet olives, cheeses (don’t miss the three-pack of Boursin!), meats and crackers.
  • Vegetable trays: Four pounds of fresh produce plus a dip. It’s simple, healthy and gloriously low-stress.

The warehouse grocer also holds its own in the frozen appetizer department. I complement a handful of homemade apps with:

  • Mini quiches
  • Italian meatballs
  • Baked brie

Just pop the Costco goodness in your oven and then serve warm!

Turkey, Beef and Ham

From four-pound turkey breasts to full-size birds, Costco has a wide selection of main entre options to choose from. If your family isn’t into turkey, or if you’re just craving variety, consider serving a well-marbled beef tenderloin or a honey-glazed ham. Both options are available at Costco, along with whole filet wild sockeye salmon.

Traditionalists, you’ll want to bookmark this step-by-step guide on how to cook a Thanksgiving turkey.

Cranberries and Cranberry Sauce

There are two kinds of peoplethose who serve canned cranberry sauce and those who must make it themselves. Costco is prepared for you both, with the grab and go convenience of pre-made cranberry sauce, and a generously stocked produce department, filled with fresh whole cranberries, oranges and lemons, the perfect ingredients for a tart homemade cranberry sauce.

Side Dishes

From the comfort food starches we all crave (cue the mac and cheese and creamy mashed potatoes) to favorite fall greens like Brussels sprouts, Costco has an ample selection of grab-and-go side dishes, as well as washed-and-ready veggies.

You could boil, mash and season those potatoes by yourself (because you have nothing else to do that day, right?), or you could pick up a pan or two from Costco. They offer both Yukon Gold and sweet potato varieties, either of which can be dressed up with favorite toppings to turn into semi-homemade sides.

You can also buy the green beans along with an extra-large bag of what makes the much-loved green bean casserole so goodFrench’s fried onions!

Desserts

What is Thanksgiving without a bevy of beautiful desserts? Costco has the classic desserts you’d expect, plus one extra:

If you’re into seasonal sweets that are a refreshing take on traditional options, Costco has you covered. Their roulade-inspired pumpkin rolls are easy to serve, and make for an impressive presentation, too. Top with a generous serving of this fresh, homemade whipped cream (it’s way easier than you think, and yes, you can buy the handful of ingredients you need at Costco).

Paper Products

If you have more guests than fine chinaor would rather watch football after dinner instead of dealing with dirty dishesopt for heavy-duty paper products. Costco has ample options for well-constructed and budget-friendly plates. So worth it for a free pass on kitchen clean-up!

How to Make Fried Chicken and Waffles https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/chicken-and-waffles/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/chicken-and-waffles/#respond Fri, 22 Feb 2019 21:21:57 +0000 http://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=892017 Craving a hearty breakfast or a delicious breakfast-for-dinner? Make fried chicken and waffles. Our step-by-step guide includes ideas for toppings and sides.

The post How to Make Fried Chicken and Waffles appeared first on Taste of Home.

Fried chicken and waffles is a classic combination that’s every bit as delicious as it is unexpected. It can be a breakfast, lunch or dinnerand it makes for exquisite late-night snacking!

Fried chicken is a favorite lunch or dinner across the country, but have you ever eaten it for breakfast? If you’ve been to the best fried chicken restaurants in the states, chances are you’ve at least seen it on the menu. When you need a change from pancakes and bacon or sausage and eggs, crispy chicken and sweet waffles drizzled in maple syrup is the way to go.

Why is chicken and waffles a thing?

Chicken and waffles is actually a vintage recipe from early America! The combination dates back to the 1600s in Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine when pulled chicken was piled atop waffles. In the 19th century, German settlers often dined on chicken and waffles covered in gravy. (Is that the earliest instance of breakfast for dinner?) By the 1930s, the dish was reinvented again, this time in Harlem, where the Wells Supper Club served chicken and waffles to those dining too late for dinner but too early for breakfast. Today, the combo is a favorite southern comfort food.

If you love chicken and waffles, try another delicious sweet-and-savory sandwich, the waffle Monte Cristo.

Chicken and Waffles Ingredients

  • Seasoned flour: Adding seasonings and spices to the flour imbues flavor into the breading. Our recipe features a balanced mix of garlic, herby thyme and spicy paprika, but you can stir in just about any dried spices and herbs you like.
  • Milk and lemon: Stirring lemon juice into milk results in a sour, tangy buttermilk substitute that adds flavor to the chicken. It also helps the flour stick, resulting in crispier chicken.
  • Maple syrup: Rich, sweet maple syrup is a tasty contrast to the savory chicken, and it binds the flavors of the entire dish together. Here’s the best maple syrup according to our Test Kitchen.

Fried Chicken and Waffles Recipe

This recipe from our Test Kitchen serves eight people, with about one piece of chicken and one waffle per person. Leftovers taste great any time of day.

Ingredients

Chicken:

  • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup 2% milk
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 to 4 pound broiler/fryer chicken, cut up
  • Oil for deep-fat frying

Waffles:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs, separated
  • 2 cups 2% milk
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • Maple syrup

Directions

Step 1: Prep the dry chicken breading

In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, thyme, paprika, salt, garlic powder, and pepper. Use a bowl that’s wide enough to fit the chicken when you dredge them in.

Step 2: Whisk the egg mixture

In a separate shallow bowl, whisk together the egg, milk and lemon juice until blended.

Step 3: Dredge the chicken

Dip each piece of chicken in the flour mixture to coat all sides; shake off excess. Dip the chicken in the egg mixture, then again in the flour mixture. This triple coating ensures a thick, even layer of breading, which creates a crisp crust. (It’s one of the secrets behind KFC’s secret recipe!)

Step 4: Fry the chicken

In an electric skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 375F. Fry the chicken, a few pieces at a time, until the skin is golden brown and juices run clear, 6 to 10 minutes on each side. One of the best tips for southern fried chicken? Don’t overfill the fryer, or the temperature of the oil will drop, resulting in a soggy coating. If you’re new to frying at home, check out our guide to deep-frying with confidence.

Drain the cooked chicken on paper towels or a wire rack while the next batch cooks. Keep warm in a low oven.

Step 5: Combine the dry ingredients for the waffles

Now it’s time to make the waffle batter. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Step 6: Stir together the wet ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, milk and oil until the mixture is uniform in color and texture.

Step 7: Combine the wet and dry ingredients

Stir the egg mixture into the flour mixture just until moistened.

Step 8: Whip egg whites

In a small bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form; fold into batter.

Step 9: Cook the waffles

Bake the waffles in a preheated waffle maker according to manufacturer’s directions.

Step 10: Put it all together

Top each waffle with a piece of chicken, drizzle with maple syrup, and enjoy!

Tips for Making Fried Chicken and Waffles

Fried Chicken And Waffles

Which are the best parts to use for fried chicken and waffles?

We like to use boneless chicken for fried chicken and waffles. That makes the chicken easy to eat with a knife and fork, along with the waffle. Boneless thighs are very juicy and tender, but you can also use wings or chicken strips.

How do you know when fried chicken is done?

In general, chicken is done if the juices run clear when pierced. To be extra certain, you should test the internal temperature of the thickest part of the chicken. Chicken is safe to eat when it reaches an internal temperature of 165, though we prefer the taste and texture of dark meat cooked to 170-175.

Can you use frozen waffles for chicken and waffles?

While it’s tough to beat a fresh, homemade waffle, you can definitely speed up the process by using a frozen waffle. You can find our Test Kitchen’s best frozen waffles to see which calls to you. If you’re truly in a rush, you can even use frozen chicken strips as well as frozen waffles.

What should you serve with fried chicken and waffles?

We love classic maple syrup with waffles. The sweetness complements the savory chicken and ties it to the waffle. Honey works, too. If you like heat, shake on a dash of one of the best hot sauce brands. Many brunch side dishes taste delicious with chicken and waffles. Think bacon (extra points if you make caramelized bacon twists), hash browns, fruit salad or fried eggs. Serving chicken and waffles for dinner? Prep a classic side dish for fried chicken.
